After five days of waiting for weather at the eastern tip of Tierra del Fuego, there is a break in the strong winds and Madrone poked her nose into the infamous (for sailors, anyway) Strait of Le Maire. We were careful to depart at slack water, and even then conditions were uncomfortable- large, short-period waves from several different directions turned the strait into a washing machine.

But after a couple of hours, we were through and conditions immediately improved. The wind that we’ve found in the ocean has been much lighter than forecast, so we’re sailing slowly north and east, thankful that we’re no longer listening to 40 knot gusts rattling through Madrone’s rigging.
