The latitudes of Patagonia and Cape Horn, between 50 and 60 degrees south, are known to sailors as the Furious Fifties for their very strong winds. The next band north, between 40 and 50 degrees, is called the Roaring Forties for its strong winds. In theory, the strength of the weather systems should moderate as we head further north.

In practice, latitude 50 is just an arbitrary dividing line. So we’re not that surprised too see some stronger winds predicted to the north in our latest weather forecast. But in any case, we’re happy to have left the Furious Fifties – the next goal is reaching latitudes that start with a 3!

All’s well onboard.
