Cape Hatteras is one of the major navigational obstacles for boats working their way north or south on the east coast of the US. The north-flowing Gulf Stream is at its strongest off the cape, and when strong north winds collide with the fast-flowing “river” of warm water dangerous conditions can result.

We waited for a forecast of moderate winds from the south, and our rounding of the cape was a non-event. We had nice downwind sailing conditions with nearly flat seas, and we took the opportunity to give Code Blue a little exercise…
