With Madrone on the hard for a few weeks for maintenance, we opted for the most American of summer traditions – Road Trip!

The first step was to fly back to San Francisco to pick up our trusty adventure van, AV. After a few days of helping Angie’s parents move and settle into their new digs on the west slopes of the Sierra Nevadas, we pointed the bow (ok, actually the hood, but we miss traveling by boat) east with a goal of making it back to the east coast.

From California, to Nevada, to Arizona, to New Mexico, to Texas, to Oklahoma, and on to Missouri…

Back in the saddle again…
Sonora Pass cuts through the Sierra Nevadas north of Yosemite, and tops out at almost 10,000′ (3,000m)
Breakfast in Flagstaff, AZ, was Mike’s first order of chilaquiles since we left Mexico a couple years ago. Can’t go wrong with nachos for breakfast…
A beautiful sunset just outside Santa Fe, NM. While not exactly on our route, the detour was worth it for the nice scenery and the delicious green chile stew at Pantry Restaurant
Say “Texas” and most people, us included, think first of oil rigs. We saw some, but our route through the panhandle featured about 10 times more wind turbines than oil rigs.
Camping in McClellan Creek National Grasslands in the Texas Panhandle. Our expectations for camping in Texas were admittedly low, and this spot easily exceeded them.
The St Louis Cardinals were scheduled to be on the road during our visit, so we stopped in southwestern Missouri to catch a Springfield Cardinals (Double A) game instead.
