Block Island lies only 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island, and it’s one of the most popular boating destinations on the entire east coast of the US. Fairly reliable sea breezes make the sail from the mainland to the island easy, and the Great Salt Pond in the middle of the island gives great protection for boats, whether they grab one of the many, many moorings or drop anchor on the edge of the mooring field.

A bunch of friends rafted together- looks like fun!

The easy accessibility, in combination with regular ferry service from the mainland, results in a crowd of people and boats. Crafts of all shapes and sizes fill the anchorage, and many folks “raft up” – sharing an anchor or a mooring with other boats. It’s a party atmosphere, and in our opinion no boat trip up the east coast is complete without experiencing a night at Block Island.

One of the convenient services in many busy NE harbors is the free pump out boat. You hail them on the VHF radio and they swing by to pump out your holding tank
