After a week or two of nonstop boatwork, even the most dedicated sailor needs a break. Luckily for us, Madrone is docked just a few miles from St. Simons Island.

The town of Brunswick, and the marina where Madrone bob gently, lies on the inland edge of St. Simons Sound. The outer edge of the sound is formed by the aptly named St Simons Island.

With around 15k year-round residents, the island is also one of the premier vacation destinations in the state of Georgia. Numerous golf courses, graceful houses, and a relaxed island atmosphere are all draws for visitors.

Pretty nice weather for mid-winter

For us, though, the number one attraction is definitely the beach. St. Simons features miles of beautiful, wide, white sand beaches. All accessible to the public from numerous parking areas and pedestrian paths, the beach is backed by waving sea grasses and slopes gently to the water. We’ve even seen some optimistic surfers attempting to catch the small wind chop rolling in over the shallow offshore sandbars.
