The Vendee Globe, the world’s preeminent solo round the world race, is going on right now. And from what we understand, the racers spend the roughly seven weeks onboard eating dehydrated food from pre- made pouches, like backpackers.

Things are a bit different aboard Oso. Our meals are perhaps a bit simpler, but we eat more or less in the same way as we do when we’re cruising close to shore. There’s nothing like a good meal to round off the rough edges of one of the inevitable bad weather days mid-passage.

That we’re able to enjoy eating onboard even when we’ve been away from land for a week and a half is a testament to the work that Angie puts in before we leave and underway. From hunting down unrefrigerated vegetables (which tend to stay fresh longer), to keeping track of how much we eat so that we rarely run out of anything, to planning each meal to take advantage of the fresh food we have left, all that work is definitely an important part of a good passage, at least for us.

All’s well aboard.
