Each year, hundreds of boats sail from Panama to the South Pacific. And to maximize their time in the tropics before the onset of the next cyclone season, most of them make the passage in late March to early May, the end of this year’s cyclone season.

We’ve only seen one other sailboat, and that just a view of their sails for a couple of minutes in the distance. But there are plenty out here, nearly all sailing either to or directly past the Galapagos on their way to the Marquesas archipelago in French Polynesia.

So when we turned south to try to avoid the big windless patch, we left the herd. It doesn’t really matter to our day-day activities, but it feels different to be breaking away from the pack.

All’s well aboard.
