Back in very early 2020, we sailed from Galapagos to Easter Island aboard Madrone. It turned out to be a good weather passage, mostly close reaching in the SE trades.

Today, we happened to cross our track from that 2020 passage while on our way to French Polynesia. Crossing that previous track, in combination with our passages to Chile, down through Patagonia, and then Epic Journey north in the Atlantic means that we’ve now completed a circumnavigation of South America.

It’s been a good chance to reminisce about those previous passages, both the nice and the challenging episodes. And we’re very happy that just like last time we sailed this way, this has also been a good weather passage so far.

Today marked our third day of reaching in the trades. The true wind is 13-17kts just behind the beam, which puts the apparent wind nearly directly on the beam – a wind angle most boats like best. Skies are sunny, the sea state is reasonable, the afternoon temperature has backed off from oppressive to comfortable, with only an annoying half-knot negative current to detract from the sailing.

All’s well aboard.
