We see dolphins fairly regularly in coastal waters, riding our bow wake and seeming to welcome us in a new landfall. That’s probably because there are often many food sources in the upwelling water that can occur close to shore, and it’s easier to live close to your food.

In our experience, it’s a bit more rare to see dolphins in the middle of an ocean basin. So we were pleasantly surprised to hear the familiar “Pffffffttttt” and splash of a dolphin surfacing for a breath. Except it wasn’t one, it was a pod of 50 or so, taking turns getting a push from Oso’s bow, zipping in and out of the pack, and leaping completely out of the water to breathe.

Will a visit from dolphins ever get old? Not yet, at least…

All’s well aboard.
