Oso is in the home stretch.
We’ve now sailed nearly 4000nm on this passage, and the end of the day puts us about 90nm from the entry pass through the reef that surrounds the Gambier group of islands and motus.
We are excited to arrive, without a doubt – although we’ve made a longer nonstop passage on the past, this journey is the longest distance the vast majority of ocean sailors (who are a tiny minority of sailors overall) will ever transit without a stop. For perspective, just this passage is about 1/6 of the circumference of the planet.
On the other hand, our arrival will also mark the end of the steady rhythm of our simple life onboard – just keeping the boat moving in the right direction as quickly as possible without stressing any gear enough to break it, eating, sleeping, and relaxing.
And the biggest change is one of mindset – looking forward to arriving at the destination instead of just enjoying the journey that takes us there. Perhaps we can do both…
All’s well aboard.
