Staying in the same anchorage for more than a few days is not really our style.  Usually after a night or two, we are both ready to move on to find a new cove or bay with a different view and new things to explore.

But, sometimes the weather doesn’t cooperate and we find ourselves in an anchorage for more than a couple of nights.   Since there have been gale force winds in the Strait of Georgia for the past four days, this is our fourth night at anchor in Nanaimo.

In Nanaimo we have a fabulous anchorage tucked between Newcastle & Protection Islands.

From our anchor spot we are a short dinghy ride into town where we have been able to buy groceries, do laundry, go out for tasty meals, and walk along the lovely waterfront path.  There is a public dock on Newcastle Island where we can tie up our dinghy.

The entire island is a public park with great hiking trails through forests of evergreens, oaks and madrones. We’ve really enjoyed having access to both the city and the park.

The marine forecast looks like we may get a break in the strong NW winds tomorrow.  If that’s the case we will head out from Nanaimo in the morning.  It is always a little frustrating to be stuck somewhere, waiting for a change in the weather, but that is how it goes.  Even though we are both ready to move on, we feel very fortunate to have been “stuck” in Nanaimo.
