Sharing an anchorage with Red and his salmon troller Sundance

One of the things that has really surprised us about Southeast Alaska is the friendliness of nearly everyone we’ve met since Ketchikan.  We’ve had one great experience after another:

  • In Sitka, Kelsey and Lorraine from the commercial fishing boat Cheri D gave us a huge fillet of freshly-caught steelhead
  • Red on the commercial fishing boat Sundance gave us tips on anchorages and unmarked shoals off the west coast of Chichagof, and also handed us a package of his venison
  • Fred, Cynda, and Ian from Juneau aboard S/V Songline helped us with a hand-drawn map of the anchorage in the otherwise uncharted Ford’s Terror
  • While in Glacier Bay National Park, the sailboat Nimue flagged us down while passing to share about 5 pounds of the fresh halibut they had caught the night before
  • Two fellow sailors from Whitehorse in the Yukon in Canada, Bob and Darren aboard a nice McGregor 26, invited Angie for a day of halibut fishing
  • The public dock in Elfin Cove was full, so Dave Evans aboard the beautiful Nordhavn 43 MaryPearl invited us to raft up to them, and then they gave us their spot when they left
  • Dave and Carol Miner aboard the even more impressive Nordhavn 55 Ocean Explorer shared tips for getting into White Sulphur Hot Springs (and let us pet their two dogs Dixie and Rose)
  • A random local at Rosie’s Bar in Pelican found out we had sailed in from Portland and bought us a round of beers

Our generally great experiences with folks here has really made an already incredible trip even better.
