Sailing south to Manzanillo

Variety is the spice of life, so after a few days in undeveloped Ensenada Carrizal it was off to the big city of Manzanillo.  The southern end of town is home to a large commercial shipping terminal, complete with an interesting (although only if you like boats) stream of large container ships heading into the port or coming out to anchor.

Las Hadas anchorage

The northern end of town is known as Las Hadas, and it offers a well-protected and picturesque anchorage.  Bright white painted buildings climb the steep hills, and a string of hotels and resorts circle the end of the bay.  A headland protects this end of the bay – the wind waves and swell are cut off, leaving only the gentlest of waves to roll slowly up the beach.

The key advantage of any larger city is the shopping.  While the local abarrotes are decent for grocery shopping, it’s also nice to partake in the mesmerizing selection of a huge supermarket.  We made two large shopping runs, each time walking the several miles to the store before taking a cab on the way home.

And Madrone’s crew continues to eat their way through Mexico.  In addition to the mandatory stop for al pastor tacos any time we see a spit, we heard from our friends aboard S/V Volare about an all-you-can-eat chicken wings spot – Wingman.  We joined several other boats from the anchorage to try our luck, and it turned out that we felt very lucky!  Delicious wings and a good time with friends are hard to beat.
