Checking out the waves at La Lancha

Sayulita is a great spot for spending time at the beach.  While there is a surf break just in front of town, the waves didn’t cooperate while we were there.  So, we hopped in the surf truck almost every morning and zipped over to Punta de Mita.

Secret Beach

There are good boards for rent at Wildmex, and from the surf shop it’s a short 10 minute hike through the jungle to the beach. La Lancha is the surf spot at the end of the trail – it breaks on even a small swell so it’s a reliable and fun spot.  The surf shop also has an adjacent cafe that features an honest-to-god espresso machine, a rare find in Mexico.

The beach in Sayulita is also beautiful with fine white sand stretching about a mile from town north to a small headland.  There’s a trail through the jungle around the headland, and the far side is known as Secret Beach.  While only a 15 minute walk from town, that’s about 14 minutes too much walking for most of the visitors.  So, Secret Beach deserves its name – we shared a mile of open sand with only a couple other people.
