Madrone is ship shape and ready to leave at the marina while we head inland to Mexico City

Each time we leave Madrone tied up to a dock for a multi-day trip away, we step through a checklist to prepare. Through-hull valves shut – check! Electrical power switched off – check!

Safe & sound, just like we left her

After working through the 15 to 20 steps on the checklist, we’ve done everything we reasonably can to ensure that the boat will be in the same shape as when we left her. But each time we return from a trip, we’re delighted and a little surprised to find that nothing major has gone wrong.

I am sorry buddy, but we have a no pet policy aboard Madrone

Returning from almost two weeks away in Mexico City, the only thing that was different from a normal trip away is that Madrone inherited a new mascot. A large iguana, at least a yard/meter long, basked in the sun, warming its belly on the heat radiating from the sunny foredeck.

Ok Senor Iguana, we know you live in trees. Even though Madrone is named after a tree, she is not a tree- so off you go

Good thing there’s a veterinarian on board! A couple of tentative pokes with a boat hook encouraged the impressive-looking reptile to dive off the bow into the water, and Madrone was just the way we left her.
