Like most volcanic islands rising sharply from the surrounding sea, there is little flat ground around. Despite that, Moorea offers a surprising number of hiking trails.
Given the terrain, most of them are very steep – they climb from sea level to several thousand feet elevation in just a couple miles of hiking.
Strenuous hiking doesn’t exactly fit with our relaxation agenda, but in a weak moment we succumbed to the lure of a great view. We chose the most accessible hike – Magic Mountain.

Climbing to a small overlook about 700 feet above the lagoon, the hike only took an hour or so. The reward was the view, which speaks for itself.
