Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson is generally considered one of history’s top naval leaders and strategists. Already famous for a series of victories in consequential sea battles by the early 1800s, Nelson was killed during his best-known conflict – the Battle of Trafalgar.
So as sailors, one of our first stops in London was a visit to Trafalgar Square to admire the 169’/50m tall Nelson’s Column. Despite a complicated legacy, some of Nelson’s innovative leadership tools are still used today, and there’s little doubt of his impact on English naval history.
