As nomadic sailors, it’s likely that we’ve spent more time than most poring over maps and charts of the Pacific Ocean. But even for us, one thing about the Pacific stands out as we sail across it – it’s an enormous body of water!

When we left Panama, we sailed over 4000nm before reaching the eastern edge of French Polynesia. We then sailed almost 2000nm more to reach the western edge. From there, it’s about 1500nm further to reach Tonga, and then about the same distance down to New Zealand.

That’s about 9000nm of distance to cover just to get across one ocean. And even though that total includes a few zigs and zags as we bob from one archipelago to the next, the conclusion is the same – the Pacific is huge!

All’s well aboard.
