With Madrone constantly underway, the boat is full of small noises. There’s the creaking of loaded lines in blocks and on winches, the water rushing against the hull, and the wind blowing across the sails and through the rigging. And, there’s the occasional knocking or squeaking caused by something not stowed securely.

A new squeaking noise started from the forward area of the boat during Angie’s morning watch. She walked into the forward cabin to investigate drawers and lockers, but couldn’t locate the intermittent squeaking. Figuring that it was a new noise from the sails or rigging, she went on deck to check it out.

At the front of the boat, Angie found a pod of dolphins cavorting in Madrone’s bow wake. The squeaking noises were the dolphins calling to one another, and the sound was traveling through the hull.

While Angie has degrees in both zoology and veterinary medicine, she is not yet fluent in Dolphinese. So, we don’t have an exact translation. But our best guess is “Why can’t these guys sail the boat any faster?”
